Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres was a towering figure in French Neoclassical painting, born in Montauban in 1780. A student of Jacques-Louis David and a winner of the Prix de Rome, Ingres became the foremost defender of classical academic tradition against the Romantic movement, producing portraits and figure paintings of extraordinary refinement and technical precision.
His celebrated works, including La Grande Odalisque and The Apotheosis of Homer, established him as one of the great masters of Western art. Ingres led the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and his influence on academic painting extended well into the 20th century. His works are held in the Louvre and major museums worldwide.
