Alexander Gardner
Alexander Gardner was a Scottish-American photographer born in 1821, best known for his pioneering Civil War photography and his portraits of Abraham Lincoln. Working alongside Mathew Brady before establishing his own studio, Gardner created some of the most iconic documentary images of 19th-century America.
Gardner's photographs of Civil War battlefields, including the haunting images from Antietam and Gettysburg, were among the first to bring the reality of war to the American public. His work helped establish photography as a serious documentary and artistic medium, and his portraits of Lincoln remain among the most studied images in American history.
