Frederic Leighton
Frederic Leighton was a British painter and sculptor born in Scarborough in 1830, who became the leading figure of Victorian academic painting and the first British artist to be made a hereditary peer. His richly coloured, classically inspired paintings of mythological, historical, and allegorical subjects represent the height of Victorian aesthetic ambition.
Leighton's iconic works, including Flaming June (c.1895) and The Garden of the Hesperides (1892), are celebrated for their sensuous beauty, technical mastery, and extraordinary colour. His paintings are held in the Leighton House Museum in London, the Lady Lever Art Gallery, and in collections worldwide.
