Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker born in Paris in 1834, widely regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism — though he preferred to call himself a Realist. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and deeply influenced by the Old Masters he studied in Italy, Degas brought a superb command of draughtsmanship and an extraordinary eye for movement to his depictions of modern Parisian life.
More than half of his works depict dancers, and his ballet scenes, intimate bather studies, and racetrack paintings remain among the most recognised images in Western art history. Working across oil, pastel, monotype, and sculpture, Degas captured fleeting moments and unconventional viewpoints with a technical mastery that influenced Picasso, Matisse, and generations of figurative artists. His works are held in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Gallery in London.
